All Parties Are Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty.
Things have taken a turn for the worst when it comes to the tension between two current candidates in the City of Monroe. During the events following the election forum on [February 22, 2024], an altercation of words took place between Former Mayor of Monroe, Jamie Mayo and current Councilwoman Kema Dawson. The conversation started as a calm discussion in which the two were leaving the forum and Jamie Mayo asked Councilwoman Dawson to discuss why there has been a divide between the two since 2020.
From my understanding there were accusations made of social media slander from the past which has left a 4-year disdain between the families. It was also mentioned and clarified that the conversation had nothing to do with the current election at hand, but more-so past history and unresolved tension. The situation escalated when they exchanged words following a heated discussion regarding the outcome of the past elections and social media accusations.
During this verbal confrontation, Former Mayor Jamie Mayor begin to become aggressive with Councilwoman placing his finger in her face and in return she returned the same gesture, which ultimately resorted to him forcefully grabbing the wrist of Councilwoman Dawson after she proceeded to insist that he refrain from putting his hand in her face. At the time Councilwoman Dawson challenged Jamie Mayo concerning his threatening words of what he would do to her and her husband. The words spoken are not being released because of the profane language involved. This will ensure the protection of our (iConnect's) integrity.
The actions of Former Mayor, Jamie Mayo is reported to have been aggressive and unwarranted, resulting in Councilwoman Dawson seeking proper counsel and being encouraged to file a police report for physical battery against Former Mayor Jamie Mayor.
Tensions and confrontations were not new between the two; there had been multiple instances of public disagreements and heated exchanges throughout the previous campaigns. This situation is still unfolding and we are preparing to hear both sides of the story.
At this current time, we are sure that an official Police Report has been filed and the charges are being investigated by MPD. As of tonight, no arrest has been made. As more details come to our attention, we will keep you our audience updated with the progress of this story. Will this hurt the Mayo Campaign? We all await to see the outcome of this matter.
